2019 Sets (929)

Overprint mania! I think I'll hit the pause button for now. 3,943 cards in one year? WTF? Granted, I'm a greybeard collector/player (but don't call me a boomer!), so this may seem like a whiny first-world rant, but this all seems a bit excessive:

This is just calendar year 2019!!! In what reality is this OK? Hey, I get the profit motive: I have a decent position (>$100,000) in Hasbro stock, so I want to see the company thrive. However, this is not long-term planning; this is choking the channel and will run off players and collectors alike. I'm also an avid baseball card collector and I personally witnessed the near-death of the hobby in the mid-1980's when overproduction deflated the value of each individual card to almost zero. To wit (from the linked article):
"In 1989, the Upper Deck Co. would transform the [sports card] industry with flashy, high-priced cards aimed at investment-minded collectors. As the sales of new sports cards swelled to more than $1 billion a year, children began to flee the hobby, turned off by the pricey packs and confounding number of sets."
Sound familiar? I know Magic has been declared dead numerous times in the past and Wizards of the Coast has always seemed to weather the storm, so we'll see. However, I will now be rooting from the sidelines, cute cats and ponies not withstanding.
